Sturgis, Deadwood, & Lead, SD

(high 88, low 44, bright sun)

Worked on the blog til about noon, took in a German lunch on the porch of the Alpine Inn. Stopped in two quilt shops in Rapid City and did my little bit for the local economy. Went to Sturgis where the motorcycle rally was. Small town, not much there, lots of hilly land for the cyclists to camp on. Drove on to Deadwood, the only town which is on the Historical Register. Didn’t see many old buildings but plenty of casinos.

Stopped at Lead where there is an open-air gold mine.

On the way back to the campground, we passed the Pactola Dam and Reservoir, Rapid Valley Unit. It was a beautiful reservoir, and I could easily spend time there.

There are many of these signs along the highway in South Dakota. They speak for themselves. Excuse the blurriness, please.

Took some last minute pictures of the Mount Rushmore KOA and the video for Heidi.

  2. Ok, maybe I'm being slow...why do the signs say X marks the spot?

  3. I'm sure the X is the spot where people have died...that's sad. Like the crosses we see around here on the roadside. Love the video, have to show Heidi when I get home...
