Great Sand Dunes

Friday, September 18, 2009

Today we drove to the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountains to see the Great Sand Dunes. They are the highest sand dunes in North America rising 750'. Along the way we saw some more pronghorns and I couldn't resist taking more pictures of these lovely creatures who are the fast land mammals in North America

We passed some more spectacular mountains and clumps of numerous sunflowers which are everywhere out here.

We stopped at a cafe for some ice cream. This is the typical architecture of the small shops in the west.

The aspen are turning a brillant yellow. I tried to capture them from the moving car. In an aspen grove, each tree is connected underground with another so that all are connected and all share the same DNA.

The Great Sand Dunes can be seen from miles away.

At the dunes...

On the way out of the park, we saw some mule deer.
