Garden of the Gods and Manitou Cliff Dwellings

(high 63, low 56, cloudy & rainy)

Yesterday was a travel day from Rawlins, WY to Fountain, CO, a little below Colorado City, the second largest city in Colorado. We went thru Denver and saw Mile High Stadium, up close and personal, as they say, as well as some quite sights of the city.

There was a storm to the west that seemed to sit on the mountains and did not move at all. This morning we heard there was snow on Pike's Peak.

We woke up to clouds and light rain. First real rain since Indiana. We drove around the Garden of the Gods, had lunch during a thunderstorm and rode some more. Pike's Peak and the entire back mountain range was hidden from view by the clouds/fog. Slowly the sky cleared and the mountains were visible again. This is high plains area, we left the high desert behind with the sun and the warmth.

At the visitors' center we saw these life-sized buffalo and in the parking lot, two black-billed magpies. Their tails are really long.

The rain storm made the rocks look even more red. The water running down the sides of the roads was also very rust colored.

Farther down the road was the Manitou Cliff Dwellings site. Anasazi ("The Ancient Ones" or "The Ancestral Puebloans") lived here from 1100 - 1300 A.D. A newer structure had been built and occupied by the Pueblo Indians of today until 1984.
